Ties/Sleepers are placed on ballast to forms the trackbed upon which the track placed. It is packed between, below, and around the ties and ballasted to bear the load from the railroad ties, to facilitate drainage of water, and to keep down vegetation that might interfere with the track structure. The ballast also holds the track in place as the trains roll over it. It consists of crushed stone. Many modelers consider ballasting a chore, but one that is necessary to get the right look.

More on Ballast

The ballast for railway modelers comes in many sizes and colors. You will need to choose the size—this dependant on the scale of your model railway. Choose the color because of the location of your railway. Size is critical as over or under size ballast looks wrong. Colour is not as important as variations occurred around the country dependant on what local stone was available. It is possible to combine two colors to create the effect you require, but mixing the materials must be done accurately to allow you to combine the two colors again should you need more material. Choose the size and color that are appropriate for your scale and locale and complement the colors of your scenery.

Review of 103 Black Cinder

I bought this product as a replacement for Highball 124 Cinder. Both items were intended for HO gauge use. I found the Arizona R&M product to be superior with better grain size and few if any oversize pieces. it is compatible with the Highball product, so it makes for an easy transition. I recommend it.

Great Ballast!!!

I really like using this product. The color is Great, and the product stays where you put it, and doesn't float around when adding water and glue. Color from bag to bag can be slightly different, but that is because it's natural product, and in Nature nothing is the same. It's so close though, that you don't notice the change. I highly recomend using these products!!!

Excellent and realistic product

Best looking N scale ballast out there. Looks great in my yard area.

Can't do a steam or transition era railroad with out this. Yard leads , around power plants, and any where steam locomotives are service d.

Excellent product

I model the transition error and have places with cinder ballast. This ballast is extremely realistic and the best part is it is non-magnetic, so it won't cause shorts like some other brands cinder ballast. I highly recommend ARM products!
